Ever since the philosophy of blogging has become popular a lot has happened in the blogosphere planet. There was a time when traditional bloggers used to rely on ms-word because of comfort factor and less exposure with web-based blogging clients. But not now, thats what these latest services appear to be saying :)

I talked about Zemanta recently and I’m happy to say that I am really enjoying it. A quick-recap of Zemanta is that is a browser-plugin(firefox/ie) or blog-platform plugin which automates your taggging, hyperlinking, image and article embedding needs via semantic search. Continue reading

Cool Apps & Tools

Few freeware apps which make life better

techsmith SnagIt Screen Capture Utility – While Microsoft Windows does offer a Prt Sc (Print Screen) key it is fairly complicated and painful to capture the screens with the ‘Prt Sc’ key. A solution to this problem is offered by Windows Vista through a nice screen-capture utility SnagIt. SnagIt enables users to capture selections, full screens, active window. Not only that you can also capture videos and record desktop movements and save them as .avi file. SnagIt also allows you to take timed screen captures meaning you can configure SnagIt to take screen-shots at pre-defined time intervals like every 5 seconds, 10 seconds or so on.

bubblCayra.net & Bubbl.us – Mindmapping software is a great utility to share your thoughts in a professional environment. Mindmapping tools ensure faster and smoother collaboration :) There is the famous old saying having your thoughts in mind is one thing and putting them on paper is another. MindMaps allow you to do just that in a cool way :)

MindJet’s MindManager software is the best tool around but it comes at a cost.

However, there are two popular freeware alternatives:

  • Cayra.net which is desktop app that runs on Windows XP or Vista
  • Bubbl.us an online mapping service

greatnews GreatNews RSS Reader – With the evolution of RSS and Atom plenty of feed readers have been developed. There has always been a big debate over which feed reading method is the best? (desktop, web-based, mobile,email.. )

For desktop users GreatNews is an intelligent option as it offers its users multiple views to read feeds.. there is the Newspaper view, Firefox Sage view and several other options. Bloglines users can sync their feeds with GreatNews and you can always export your feeds as an OPML file :) Pretty smart utility to have.

Pune sojourns

I’m back from Pune. As it always happens during these months, it was raining and the weather was great, blankets were out – yeah they’re. I was glad to catch up with buddies who had come in from all parts of the globe for the Convocation. Some thoughts from the very brief conversation(s) I had with my buddies about their experience(s)

  • Compared to techie MBAs the marketing dudes have made quick hops and have shuffled their organizations.
  • Majority of the guys believe that the single most important factor for job shift is “money” and it is followed by “job satisfaction”.
  • Most of the guys believe that stability is vital but is at par with fat salaries.
  • Many guys expressed their interest in entrepreneurial ventures at some point of time in their careers.
  • Guys with international placements expressed their disappointment over heavy tax cuts on their salary packages.

  • Majority of the guys expressed satisfaction with their current status. Although some of the said they’re not overjoyed with their salary packages but the very own fact that they had a thing or two to learn from their company was keeping the momentum going.

  • Out of 10 almost 7 guys have switched to a new company within the first 6 months.
  • From the entire batch only 10% of guys have stuck with their parent company.

Web Hosting demystified – I

I’ve been running my blog on wordpress.com which offcourse is a free account currently. In the future, I plan to shift my blog to a domain on a wordpress.org account.

The other day I was doing a bit of search (organic search) for a cheap, reliable, quality (wow i.e. quite a bit) web-hosting provider. Did a bit of research, read some e-mails in my discussion group, talked to a couple of net experts ( not geeks but domain pros).

After some brain-storming I discovered a kool webhosting company called Velnetweb which seems to be one stop shop for all web hosting needs. Velnetweb offers web-design and wide variety of domains at cheap prices for 2 years.

My buddy gave a bit of positive feedback about Velnetweb and is quite satisfied by their service and has a hosted domain at Velnet for the last couple of years. What I look about Velnet is the ability to use wordpress.org themes which makes them quite cool.

Velnet shows a lot of promise and is best-fit solution if you are looking for a cost-effective domain hosting solution. The Velnet guys are based out of UK and offer 24 hour phone support. The future looks bright for Velnet if it continues to fulfill its promise of quality :)

All I can say at this point of time that they are creating a bit of wave by their price surely long way to stand up and be counted.
