Live Blogging – OSS Camp Delhi 08-09 September 2007 @ Day 1

Right, I am here at OSS Camp being organized at Impetus Software, Noida. It’s Day1 and I am a little late as the discussion has already started. I have quitely taken a seat at the back and am blogging live. The volunteers have begun with discussion/overview of the schedule of upcoming events. (Quick snapshot from the ongoing event..)

Presentation 1(Uzanto)

All right the first presentation is here and it is about “Speed up the performance of your Website”. This presentation is by Lalit Patel, from Uzanto and he is talking about Pareto’s principle and empty v/s full cache. Wow looks good but I am trying to pick up the pace as he is speeding up.

Some cheat codes :

  • Use a CDN
  • Add Expire Header

Other stuff… Key learning use JS(Java script right at the bottom) and CSS goes towards the top

Presentation 2 and Presentation 3(OSS Cube)

Excellent presentations on Performance Tuning in MySQL and Replication in MySql by guys from OSS Cube. Always a thing or a two to pick up from there especially the later one. The presentation on Mysql was more generic and easy to connect with. Good stuff ! Keep it up.

Presentation 4

JavaScript – “The World’s most misunderstood programming language”

It is about OOPS in JavaScript.. Introduction.. elimination of common misconceptions between JS and Java.

  • Its not connected with Java
  • Primarily the focus is towards three key features of OOPS and excludes Abstraction

Presentation 5

Saurabh from Valueone comes in um.. looking a shade nervous and excited too ! Oops the pen drive is not working properly, Saurabh humbly apologizes.

SVN(Sub Version) – It is an open source version control system

Lunch Session – Caught up with Noel Hidalgo who’s currently travelling across seven continents for his luck of seven project. Interesting, as I’d be hosting up for a couple of days and as he travels the world over and interact with Agents of Progressive Social Change, free software, bloggers, barcampers and more

Post Lunch Session update

Presentation 6

Arunima is taking us through php documenter. Talks about official websites where it is available, why it is needed, what it can do and stuff like that. Right she walks us through the php documenter with a live demonstration of it.

There seems to be an interesting problem with this camp. Somehow, I am seeing too many presentations by the conference sponsor. Guys I thought this was supposed be an OSS Conference. Oops ! People, are running just too fast and jumping and hoping. Well, my confidence and enthusiasm has evaporated suddenly and so is Mita my colleague and fellow blogger. What do we do next? Well sitting like dumb faces out here and trying to digest the security presentation. Sorry if any one of you took it the wrong way, but it is too rigid.

Presentation 7

Ok finally we’re free from the clutches as we’d a good conceptual presentation about CiviCRM and its background philosophy.

Presentation 8

Yes ! Easily the best presentation of the day so far. It’s by Mir Nazim and is about Drupal and its best practices. Gud start he’s talking about using the CVS code and says don’t just download abruptly from drupal website. Excellent presentation mtv.co.uk well that is one of the best examples of websites using Drupal. Mir has also beautifully addressed on the community aspects of drupal and using Drupal as a CMS for websites.

Presentation 9

Impact of Social media in Open Source

Noel talks about his background, his jobs & life his project and most importantly his philosophy in life. Today Noel, a renowned Drupaler rejoices when he meets fellow folks from the community. Noel also addressed the value of tools like Twitter, Paypal and some more. Well, he is a rare bunch of talent currently busy with his Luck of Seven project. Seven continents, seven months, 7777 dollars and diving into seven oceans with the essence to cover seven key points bloggers, couchsurfers, barcampers, agents of social change etc.

Noel & Mir sign-off the day in style. Much needed inspiration coming in from the two of them, thank you guys.

Day 1 comes to an end.

Summary Note: There would be different opinions from different people, some would say it is more tech-centric some would it is generic. Well as a buddy rightly said in one of the comments, forget everything, OSS has been an effort to bring folks from different regions but with a simliar line of thought together, it’s the effort from sponsors, organizers that matters. Long live the spirit of OSS, gud job OSSCube.

Dear friends, My opinion is attending an event like OSS camp must be suuported by document. Therefore we must issue participation certification to all attendees; the same may be recognised by many companies.

  2. FORWARD YOUR RESUME TO US IMMEDIATELY FOR URGENT EMPLOYMENT CONTACT:nokiacommunicationcooperation@yahoo.co.uk

  3. i agree with what manu has to say… if there is a paucity of experienced people talking, someone has to speak… and well.. OSS Cube was a promoter of the event and they encouraged their employees to participate and present.. i dont see anything wrong.. and guys.. if this were a marketing gimmick.. trust me, Impetus got a lot more advertisement than OSS Cube.

    HOW UR SIDE …

  4. kinshuk, manu, ravi, maverick – thanks for your thoughtful comments.

It is vital to keep the spirit of community events like OSS alive

  5. I got to know about DRUPAL through OSSCampDelhi. I always wanted to make dynamic website but was too lazy to learn php 😦

It was sad to see people there using windows

    It was good initiative.

  8. Well, I think this doubt is a little misplaced. I never felt any manipulation by any superior authorities. True that I am a part of Value One Infotech Pvt. Ltd. and that might reduce the credibility of this statement. But thats the truth.

The point is that not much people were volunteering to speak. So, some of the inexperienced speakers were allowed the chance. And which is a good thing since generally amateurs never really get a chance to express themselves at such events coz they don’t have any experience, but how will they have any experience if you just ask them to sit and watch everytime. The only thing that went wrong was that they went overboard with this.

I remember that Pratul talked to me on 8th that he wanted to give a talk and his talk was scheduled for 9th right away. People were more than happy to have another speaker.

I think OSSCamp needs to mature up a bit, and I am sure that it will in due course.

Lastly, let me clarify that I am not defending them, I am just sharing what I felt. Peace.

Hmm….I didn’t attend the Barcamp though but I would like to bring some points here

    1. As someone stated above, that it looks like a marketing gimik by the sponsors or a training session for the guys of OSS cube, its very true they had this session just because of that. I have been a part of OSS CUBE (alias Value One Infotech Ltd.) and they believe in these kind of marketing gimicks. They first started by having meetup sessions at their premises and then now they are organizing barcamp. The attrition rate at Value One is 75% at present, people are joining and leaving the company in the same week.

  11. Manu – Thanks for your kind words of appreciation !

Well, I was lilttle late on the second day, missed some of the presentations 🙂 so couldn’t sum it up.

  12. Hey guys, joining a little late but u have done an amazing job of live blogging, loved it. What I loved most at the venue was to talk with some of the most amazing brains. They just know everything 🙂 . And it is so nice to just sit and chat with such experienced people.

BTW, why have you not blogged the second day? You write well. Are you aware of anyone who has blogged the second day as well?

  13. Yep Noel was damn good ! No questions about that.

  14. Mir Nazim

Thanks for the words of appreciation, but Noel contributed a lot while QA session.

  15. thanks guys for chippin in ..

    OSS was simply great !

  16. Manu Sharma

Whether it was education related or not the point here is that at least someone has taken the initiative, we should appriciate that, Open Source awareness in India is needed and if there is a Education related talks there is no issue, what I feel that education is also the part of the OS Technology awareness.

  17. Napster

I had also thought that it is supposed to be a open source conference but right now it is converting more into a publicity stunt and a training session for the freshers of the sponsors of this conference here. One of my friend had already left and i m also planning for that.
